Do you approach life with a sense of inquisitive abandon or do you hide under the blankets when opportunity knocks? Or do you lie somewhere in-between?
One of the many benefits of astrology is the ability to identify a range of expected expressions along a continuum between two sides of a polarity like: positive/negative, female/male, north/south, personal/spiritual, etcetera. Opposites attract and repulse in a sometimes unconscious dance. Today we will look at the signs from the lens of security and freedom.
While each sign has its own ways of both seeking and expressing restraint or liberation, the signs can be arranged as seen in the table below. (As with so much in astrology, like life, astrological placements can modify and affect the methods and styles presented herein.
Freedom | Security |
Aries | Taurus |
Gemini | Gemini |
Leo | Cancer |
Virgo | |
Libra | Libra |
Sagittarius | Scorpio |
Aquarius | Aquarius |
Capricorn | |
Pisces | Pisces |
You may have noticed that all of the air signs and Pisces are in both categories. The duality inherent in each air sign -as exemplified by their respective two-part glyphs – will have an easier time playing on both sides and everywhere in between. The instinctively intellectual orientation of air is, in theory, neutral. While it may be the instinctual root for these three signs, life experiences are often more polarized. Theoretical extrapolations are put to test in the laboratory known as Earth until these airy individuals find their comfortable observational range. Another apt metaphor for Gemini, Libra and Aquarius is “rising above it all.” From a loftier vantage, a larger, less personal picture emerges and understanding is gained. Maturity clearly plays a role here as life unfolds.
Pisces is mutable, water and the 12th zodiacal sign, representing not only the transcendental waters from which we all came, but where we will each one day return – shows us the theme of water. Wholly formless in its liquid state, H2O requires freezing cold or earth to give it form, shape, support. A frozen pond or tide pool can be viewed as security seeking water whereas the gush of geyser or waterfall reflects more independence for where the water may go.
Our ability to express along a spectrum is akin to individuals whose muscles are agile and response-able: there is an ability to meet life where it is rather than being stuck in one set place. Most of us have planets in various signs throughout the chart, so chances are you have planets in both sides of this particular polarity giving you an interesting mixture of the ability to be more freedom seeking in certain parts of your life while being more security oriented in others. As the planets continue to move across the sky through time, you will experience various challenging tests as well as supportive periods to various parts of yourself by transit and progression as your life unfolds. The planets also have their own inherent ways of expressing this duality, thereby adding further definition:
Planet | Approach |
Moon | Security |
Sun | Freedom |
Mercury | Freedom |
Venus | Security |
Mars | Freedom |
Jupiter | Freedom |
Saturn | Security |
Uranus | Freedom |
Neptune | Freedom |
Pluto | Freedom |
